Why is it that virtually every time we add a Microsoft update to our computers something goes wrong? Are we the only people who suffer such problems? I'm beginning to wonder if they really test their products before releasing them onto the market or they just don't bother because they have such a large captive audience. For the non-techies, it's a absolute nightmare trying to sort things out. I'm tempted to stick with a older version that's a state of the Ark, rather than the state of the Art to avoid any more problems.

I regularly download MS updates for Windows XP and have never had a problem.

I only download a few at a time.

Always reboot afterwards.

Always wait for a minute or two AFTER reboot to let the fixes sort themselves out.

No I don't think they test them enough, they let you do that for them and rely on your error reporting to tell them what needs to be altered. I always got problems after downloading updates, especially with "Office" so now I don't bother at all
I must admit I have experienced similar problems with updates, and like you I am extremely wary. If you do an update and experience a problem afterwards try doing a systems restore, that will put your computer back prior to the update negating any further problems you could have. You will find it by going, control panel, performance and maintenance then system restore. This would be on windows xp.
