Instalshield

Instalshield Update keeps popping up on my PC to tell me progams need updating. I don't recall ever installing this programme. What is it? Where has it come from? What does it do? And is it harmful? Should I just go with it or delete it? Thanks

Installshield is used by many software companies to provide installers for their software. Some of them also install the Installshield updater so that you can upfate them from the web.

For example, I use Corel Paintshop Pro X. The PSP installer was provided by Installsheild, and the updater was installed automatically at the same time as the program. Periodically it lets me know about updates available for PSP - but it also checks for updates for itself (i.e. the Instalshield updater).
