if you have windows xp (i don't know if it works on other OS) go to start> run and type msconfig go to the startup tab and uncheck messenger

Start - set programme access and defaults - custom

uncheck messenger

I think if you are using Outlook Express as your Email you will be stuck with Messenger starting up all the time. I have tried the above fixes but it seems to come back.

If running XP Pro

Start the RUN dialogue box and type in: Gpedit.msc and click OK to launch the Group Policy Editor.

Go to Computer Config./Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Messenger

Double click the Do Not Allow Windows Messenger To Be Run setting.

In the resulting dialogue box, select the Enabled option an click OK

Close the GPE
