you can download a movie in a particular format ie mpeg, avi, xvid etc etc but will then need to convert & burn to dvd in a proper movie format using a program such as nero.
unless your dvd player states that it plays divx then xvid/divx will work 'as is' once burnt to dvd in its downloaded format.
Technically a standard encode at MPEG-2 or even MPEG-1 should play on most DVD players (thats .mpg just fyi).. The ones that tend to be a little skittish are the expensive ones from Toshiba, Sony and other such spoil-sports.. this type of encode is typically called VCD or SVCD, strictly not DVD format but is the same type contained within a DVD, only the quality, size and bittrate is higher resulting in the better DVD image.
Give it a try.. you wont loose out, most of my old players brought up a sort of file browsing menu allowing you to select the file you want to play.. so just pop the file on a CD or DVD disc and test it out.. if you dont get a menu or the file isnt there then chances are the format isnt supported.. worth a shot!!
