If you're using Outlook Express, I don't think it uses rich text, you'll have to use HTML (which should work with smileys anyway). Click Tools, Options then choose the Send tab. Check the button beside HTML as the mail sending format.

If you're using Outlook, Click Tools, Options and choose the Mail Format tab. Set Rich Text in the drop-down box named "Compose in this message format:"

If you're using Thunderbird, click Tools, Account Settings, then under your account in the left hand pane, click on "Composition & Addressing" and click the "Compose messages in HTML" box.
If you're on hotmail, it's somewhere on the options:Mail menu. possibly messages, can't remember off the top of my head. Rich text (smilies, colour-change/style-change font etc) only works on Internet explorer or the new netscape browser. ~Steelie~

hi thanks for both answers...i use yahoo mail ..does that change things?
For Yahoo mail, check the following setting:
Log in, then choose the Options link at the top right. Then choose General Preferences. Under Composing emails, make sure the "colour and graphics" option is the one that's checked.

hi ralph... did as you said and the colour and graphics are already checked..but further down i noticed it said html graphics blocked... (because of spamming)now is this just for incoming mail or would that stop me being able to drag & drop into my e-mail and sending it on?
Hi!
No, that option will stop yahoo mail from downloading images that live on another server and are linked to from the mail, rather than the whole image actually being embedded in the mail.

I think you may be stuck with Yahoo's default emoticons unless someone else has an idea, sorry!
