Video edit software

Can any one recommend an idiot proof software for video edit and I mean idiot proof. I have a Panasonic VDR-M70 digital camcorder and run my PC on XP professional with loads of muscle.

The continuing problem is I cannot capture video either from hard drive D drive or the camera itself. So I cannot get started. I think I have all the necessary drivers.
