mp3 is just a music file. so you can't convert video to music...

or do you mean just take the music from the video, and turn that into an mp3 file?
Question Author
yeah. i think it was an older version of itunes that would convert it when you click on 'convert selection to AAC'. im not great with technology so i dont really know the difference, but convert it to music file, extract it i dunno but i could listen to video recordings as a music file
OK.

I'm sure there's an easier program to do this with, but this is some good free software that does what you want:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_softwa re/video_tools/virtualdub.cfm

Extract the file on your desktop or somewhere (it doesn't need to be installed), and just double-click VirtualDub.exe

Go file-open to choose the video file, then once it's all loaded in, go file-save WAV... and choose a name for the output WAV file. then you can use iTunes to convert that WAV file into an mp3 or aac.

for some reason it wont let me upload a file. and besides my itunes doesnt have that 'convert selection to AAC' function anymore, its been replaced with 'convert selection for ipod'. if it was there i wouldnt need any external software, but is it still there and i cant find it? it would be amazing if it was, its such a good function
Are you trying to import the video into iTunes still? You need to import the .wav file that virtualdub creates for you into itunes. Then you'll be able to convert it to a .avi.

Question Author
yeah its no problem getting it into itunes. its just the function in itunes in the advanced menu sayng 'convert selection to AAC' isnt there anymore. or is there another function that will do the same thing?
You should be able to right-click a music file you want, and then click Convert to aac. That is if it's still set to import as aac. If you've changed it so that audio CDs import as mp3s, then it'll say "import as mp3"
Question Author
yeah that works, but im trying to convert a video file to aac. when i right click that one, on the old itunes it would say convert file to aac and now it says convert file to ipod
Yes but I said above... download virtualdub and use that to convert the video to a wav audio file first.
Question Author
i tried that and it wouldnt let me import the video in, and i followed the steps you set out
OK, what does it say?

Also, what type of video is it you're trying to convert? (what does the name end in.. .mpeg, .avi, etc.)
