On a PC I can press 'alt' and 'prnt scrn' to copy the screen image to paste into Word etc.

How can I do the equivalent on a Mac?

Personally, I would install a print capture utility off the web such as PrintKey 2000 (last freeware version) from:

www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=292

This program is wonderful and you'll wonder how you ever managed without it. It has awesome picture and printer options available. It should work on a Mac.

If it fails to do so, just type "print capture utilities" into Google and see what comes up.
You have many options on OS X!

Command-Shift-3 -- Take a picture of the screen
Command-Shift-4 -- Take a picture of the selection
Command-Shift-4 -- then press Control while selecting Take a picture of the screen, place in Clipboard
Command-Shift-4 -- then Spacebar. Take a picture of the selected window
