Anyone know a web site that I can send free TXT's to USA?

I have a friend who has just moved to the USA. I would like to keep in touch by TXT just as we did at home. He is on Verizon Wireless network, I am on BT O2. I found AT&T but I'm not sure if I can use this with Verizon. Would he be able to register an american number on a UK based site so he can TXT me? It's driving me MAD trying to find out!!!! :-)
