please forgive me for being thick; but how do you get on the internet with a laptop?

dial up via modem or network connection Via usb modem or ADSL Modem / Router or Wireless conection in internet cafe etc...

thanks for answering so quick but i have seen people use laptops outside, so what i meant was.... how doesit work outside, how can the internet work without a connection?

i think what ur reffering to is wi-fi enabled areas.

what u should look out for in the future is something called wi-max which should make wireless internet a lot more advanced

You can use a 3G card from O2, Vodafone etc.. this gives you connection speeds of around 350 kbps.
