why is the network speed is slow?

i am living with my friend who is in the top room i am on the first floor and the router is on the ground floor. my friend is connected at almost twice the speed i am and i was wondering if there is any solution?

I assume you are talking about wireless.

There is a lot of factors affecting wireless connection speed. Its not only vertical distance but horizontal aswell. What I'm saying is in between floors in a house it is normally wood and plaster but in beween rooms it could be brick which is harder for the waves to penetrate. Electrical interference, Cordless phones even the weather can be a factor. Try right clicking on the connection icon in the system tray at the bottom and select repair, this will refresh the connection. another option is to buy a repeater which will boost the signal strength, there are various web sites to find the best product. Have you tried moving your PC? and then repairing the connection, even just moving a few feet can have a huge impact on connection speeds.

i have tried moving the pc with a little success but as b4 the connection speed fluctuates constantly from 54Mbps to 110 Mbps

Then it really doesn't matter.

What speed is your internet connection?

54mbps is the "g" setting; this is more than enough when you think of the average 2mb internet connection.

not sure when i tried to repair it said it could not renew my ip address could that have something to do with it?

Why does it need repairing, when it's working at 54mbps or 110mbps?
