ipod shuffle not downloading properly

I wonder if any of you can help? I got my Dad a shuffle and installed it on my itunes as i already have a nano. It's just not working properly. Sometimes it downloads fine, for while, and if i take it out and try again another time, it either doesnt get recognised by the computer, or the computer says there is an error in the disk write and it has failed (disk E) if i look on my computer it doesn't show up there either? I have no idea what that means or what could be wrong? I try resetting and reinstaling itunes. it's really annoying me now as he can't use his present!! Any help woul be really appreciated.

i also frogot to say that when the error message comes up saying the disk write failed, it also says all data has been lost. When it does this, it wipes all the songs off, that i took so long downloading!

This may not solve it, but one idea is to set up a new user account under windows, so that it'll have its own instance of iTunes.

Also, try running the iPod updater software and pressing the 'restore' button.
