To conect a bluetooth phone to PC, do you just need a bluetooth USB adaptor, or do I need software as well. (I use WIn XP)

yes, if you only want basic functionality (I find that the default driver on XPSP2 works best).

however, if you want more advanced functionality, you'll need to use the software that came with the phone. if you don't have it, then you can download it from the manufacturer's website (i.e. nokia's pc suite)

That's Yes, you do just need a bluetooth adapter.

With the XP sorting bluetooth out itself, you can explore your phone's media folders (what's called OBEX file transfer) and use the computer as an audio gateway (which means you can use the computer as a hands-free device if you have a microphone and speakers on it.) You can also use the phone as a dial-up network modem.
