i have just received an e mail from hotmail saying that my account has nearly reached it's limit but my storage meter says i've used only 7% of 25MB . Anybody else getting this ?

Sounds like it could just be spam to me.

Perhaps 'hotmail' consider that as getting near the limit. The original 25mb isn't a great deal,you should be getting 250 soon if your a new subscriber

If it is from microsoft then they're stupid if you're only at 7%. Just ignore it and carry on.
