I have things like buffered M3U files and MPEGs and I was wondering if theres a programme, preferrably free, that lets you save whatevers played through your soundcard/speakers as a wav or MP3 ? Cheers!

This should fit the bill.
never mind all of that. if its an m3u file open it in notepad. all it will be is a url to the source of the mp3 file. whack this url into a download manager (probably would work if yuo just copied the url to your browser) and you can download the mp3.
