Laptop buying tips anyone?

I am going to buy a laptop to replace my current desktop PC. It will be used mostly for the internet, typing documents and storing digital camera photos.
I've worked out I'll need at least 512 MB RAM and a 60GB hard drive on the laptop, but can anyone advise me on the processors and which is the best one to go for between the various different ones (i.e. Celeron, Centrino, Pentium, etc)?

Centrino ideally. The core duo laptops may be a bit more than you need. The pentium processors aren't designed with laptops in mind, unlike the centrinos.

also i would recommend a bigger hdd if u plan to store many digital images--they eat up storage unless u have compressed them--often with a loss of quality

You should not be storing images on your hard disk. If you get a hard disk crash you will lose the lot.

ALWAYS back them up to CD or DVD.

I first download my pictures to hard disk BUT LEAVE THEM ON THE CAMERA.

I then back them up to TWO CDs or DVDs.

Only then do I delete them from the camera.

first thing's first, stay away from dell, in a word and from a professional point of view, they are crap..lol

I personally would suggest you buy a laptop with an Athlon64 1GB DDR & 100GB HD, This should have enough power, speed and graphics to run most current applications. I have a presario r4000 which I use for work which is AMD Athlon64 2.0 GHz CPU, 512 DDR 800Mhz, 60GB HD and it is quite sufficiant for home or office use I bought mine for �700 about six months ago so it should have come down in price, it also comes with a DVD RW and all other lovely little gadgets we techs love...lol

I bought it at PC World ( who I dislike, but it was the only place I could get one at the time ) but I think they are only 600 quid now :)
