a website i want to watch some gigs on suggests i download Xvid codec. apparently its free for windows but is it safe and is it really free? can anyone enlighten me? thankyou

It's just a codec. The short films you're wanting to watch have been encoded with the xvid codec, so you need it to watch them. If it's not already installed, get it here:

And yes, the codec is safe.
