While in a new message window. Go to View on the toolbar then under Toolbars on the drop down menu ensure Formatting has a tick next to it. This works with Office 2000. Should be something similar in Office XP.

Thanks nickel. but that doesn't work. Anyone got other suggestions?
Click on new message or reply to an open one. When the new screen opens click on format and tick "HTML" instead of "plain text". This should activate the previously greyed out icons.
