You need a cable like this...

You then go to the Display Properties in your control panel and configure the 2nd screen (the TV) to either clone your monitor (for watching movies) or extend it (for a bigger desktop)
Second thoughts!!

The above is if it's a normal TV set .. if it's a super-duper HDTV, then you need some sort of digital cable instead I guess! I don't have the money to upgrade to a HDTV to find out how it works just yet!!!!!
It's certainly possible but exactly how you do it will depend upon what type of output sockets there are on your PC and what type of inputs your TV supports.

Many PCs have a socket marked S-Video but this is frequently just an input (rather than output) socket. On most PCs the only form of video output is from the monitor socket. The signal from this socket isn't directly compatible with TV inputs so you need something like this:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=3 5258&FAQS=Y&doy=26m6

The output from that device is by S-Video or composite video. So, as long as your TV has got either an S-Video input socket or the phono type sockets which are used for composite video, it would work. (If your TV hasn't got those sockets you'd have to buy a convertor lead to go between the device and your TV).

Also be aware that standard TV's (i.e. not HD) have a really bad resolution. It's fine for watching filmas but crap as a monitior to run the PC.
As a complete alternative I have used a video sender successfully.
As another alternative I brought digital tv signals to the computer via a Freecom device 40-ish. Picture quality was excellent when using a decent aerial. Plus the ability to copy programs to the harddrive was a major bonus!
If you have a LCD tv, then all you have to do is disconnect the cable between your pc and monitor and connect it to the tv instead. LCD tvs are really just oversized monitors.
