MP3 - memory showing full when it is empty

I bought an MP3 player and had about 6 albums on it. I decided to add some more yesterday but some of the ones I put on were not showing so I tried again. This time the most reecent ones I added were now the only ones on it even though I had not deleted any. So, I deleted all so I could start again. Now it is showing 89 percent full even though it is showing there are no files on it. Help!!
