Define 'important'. There are many files that Windows relies on during the startup procedure. Some would say a reliable, up-to-date anti-virus program that scans on startup is important. System.dat is just as important IMHO. This along with User.dat make up the registry. Try using Windows without either and see how far you get... P.S. When was the last time you backed yours up? Can save a lot of problems later on.
