Does anyone know how to unlock the code on a Akai VCR model VS-J217EK.

That's a bit vague. Do you mean the child protection lock? On my Akai, you hold down the Stop on the remote for 5 seconds to lock/unlock.

If you haven't input a code it may be factory set to zeros, if it wants four digits try 0000, a long shot I know but worth a try!
