Windows wont shut down

Sometimes when i try and shut my pc down. it starts to close, and says "saving my settings" then stays on "windows is shutting down" until i press the reset button. why is this? it seems to happen alot if i leave my pc on for a few days

windows xp, i can leave it for hours and it still wont shut down.
