Signing up with some newletters can cause you email address to be made available to spammers. Other ways might include setting up you email software to only accept mail from addresses in your address book.
good luck
There are now web trawlers which go around sites finding email addresses to add to their databases, so avoid giving out your email address at all times (guestbooks, noticeboards etc...)
basically the whole industry is a crock with no regulation whatsoever - it's about time the government got their finger out and produced legislation

Get a domain - in fact you might already have one. Then map all unknown aliases to your own email address and make sure you never publicise that one. For instance [email protected] would point to [email protected]... Now you can give every single company a unique address like [email protected]. The email will still get to you but if it starts to receive spam, not only can you block that individual address, but you'll know which sod sold it in the first place!
