Does anyone know what the 'i' signifies/stands for?

Originally the 'i' in imac stood for 'Internet'. Now the 'i' has become so iconic that the 'i' is added to other products because people recognise is at being made by Apple. Although that is probably the reason why the i' is used with so many products, it still has the same meaning 'internet' ie: Internet Pod or 'ipod'
