Best package for creating Intranet

I have been asked to research the best tool for developing a large intranet. Currently we use FrontPage but we are looking to change. The main reason for change is so that some of the owners of the team sites would be able to modify their own pages in the future.

We have looked at Sharepoint as a lot of the links on the intranet are to documents but are concerned about the need for training for not only administrators but users as well (we have 4000 users and do not want to train them to use the intranet!). Can anyone recommend a package that would enable us to achieve this?

Microsoft are no longer going to provide Front Page and are providing two new products, maybe you should look at them.

One is Expression web Designer, see here:

From what you say I would think Sharepoint is the way to go, maybe with such a large potential user base you should be talking to Microsoft to find out their plans.

The software behind Wikipedia is open source and we recently used it to develop an intranet that users can update themselves. It might not serve your needs but it is a good package and would recomend it to anyone with a similar project
