Has my CD-R had it's day?

It could still read DVDs, but with normal CDs the light turns on, so it's showing it's trying to read it, then a few seconds later stops completely.

I had the exact same problem with mine. in the begening it wasnt much of a problem but then whenever i tried to play a Cd, the computer would just stop functioning. so my advice would be to have it checked by a professional and it might just come out to be a glitch or get a new one. but better be safe then sorry.
I would say for the price of having a "professional" look at it you could buy a new drive.
