Compaq M700 Battery Problem

Hi my old Compaq m700 which I use for work has started acting up.It had a problem with slow running but I got to the bottom that by using system restore.But ever since the laptop will not run on the battery nor it seems not to accept any charge (1% max charge) as soon as you turn off mains it dies. Up until the slow running problem it would run for at least half hour on battery.Its a old second user laptop so I woud not be surprised if the battery is scrap but it seems strange it coincided with the other problems. The laptop runs Win 98 SE.
