I have tried to hyperlink text in the navigation bar to appear in the right frame but when i do select target=rightframe (for the page to be linked to), the page appears in a new browser window and not in the right frame as i want. how can i solve this please.

Open your frameset (frameset.htm) in notepad and check what your frames are called. Even though your file maybe called rightframe.htm</>, the frame itself maybe called something different within the frameset.

sorry this doesnt work
You haven't done it right then.

If you have a frameset with 3 frames. e.g. top, left and main.

If you open your entire frameset in dreamweaver and have a menu in your lefthand frame with links that you want to open in your main window then the links will have to be something like < a target='_blank' href="path to file" target="main" >
