downloaded microsoft word 2003.
tried to edit doc. locked. tried to use options in tools but most are faded out and i.m stuck.- any clues?

This is classic behavior of what happens when someone buys a new PC with "Office 2003" installed. It is not Office, but a TRIAL VERSION, which has now expired. This article describes what you can expect:
