Wireless Laptops

I have Broadband at home with Wireless. How do I go about giving my daughter a laptop to take off to Uni which can be used against my broadband account at home? Is there something like a sim card that can be purchased? Have plenty of time yet but don't understand all this techy stuff.

I don't believe it's possible. Your daughter would need to purchase a PCMCIA card with a mobile phone company. That will allow the laptop to connect to the internet at up to 384 k/bit/sec speed.

The wireless you have at home only has a limited range, say 20-30 metres.

If she's going to Uni, she'll probably get free access at the library. If she goes into Halls, she might get access there. Otherwise, she'll have to get her own line into her flat. The PCMCIA phone method will probably be expensive - my son never used his (from Vodaphone - came free with an Acer laptop).

as wideboy says though, the uni will have a good internet network. mine charges about �60/year for access to their internet connection from all the residential rooms at the uni, as well as all the lecture theatres. they also have a couple of wireless networks that you can also use all over the campus. considering that their internet speed is very much faster than your home connection, the �60/year is very cheap.

As far as I know, Strathclyde Uni has free wireless access around the campus (their Halls might be free). The new 'privately-built' Halls do charge though.
