Other than ringing it and asking them, you can't.

If you were being pestered constantly by a certain number then you could possibly go to your network provider and see if they can trace the number to a source?

I keep getting a hang up call on my mobile - but if I ring back they don't answer - the answer machine comes on but it's just the standard vodafone answerphone message. It's not every five minutes or anything - more every week or so...

Even if you were being pestered every five minutes, I don't see how you could trace who the number belonged to. I could nip down the shop and buy a pay as you go mobile, not register it and call who ever I like. How could they trace it to me?
