Wireless Laptop. 17/8/06

Could anybody on answerbank give me any advise on what I need to use on my Wi-fi laptop when we take it away from where we live to another place,do I just take a telephone cable or Router or what not sure as I have just set it up .

if its wi-fi, then it should autommaticly lock on to the best signal avaible, providing its ariel is on

Thanks lord molly,I was told that if I went into a hotel or other establishment that had a telephone point I could put my cable in to there socket and use the internet,but can I use the internet in a static caravan that has no telephone socket.

The laptop can only get an internet connection where there is an internet connection. If there is no wired internet connection, then you'll have to depend on wifi (wireless internet connection). wifi only stretches about 10m or so, so if your caravan isn't near a wifi signal then you won't be able to get online.

Actually some hotels do offer wireless, I think some of them might charge for it, you would need to ask. If they have a secured Network, then they will need to give you some infomation \ help set it up.

If you get an ethernet cable to plug your laptop in in the hotel room (free or not), you can use a small wireless router such as Apple's Airport Express (works with PC too). This'll let you use your laptop wirelessly in your room.

Thankyou fo3nix,we used to have a outside modem for our computer until we got a laptop now we are on a Netgear Router,can we take the Router with us.

If it's just a router, yes. If it's a router+modem, then probably not (unless the modem can be turned off).

Thankyou fo3nix,it's a Netgear firewall Router no modem so hopefully I can take it with us with a filter and telephone wire and everything should be OK.

Sorry no, it'll have to be one that accepts input from an ethernet cable. The hotel will probably have an ethernet cable if it has wired internet access.
