How do I connect to a proxy server

Hi all. I've been trying to set up a proxy server to connect to the internet. I have but in the address and the port number but it always comes up on internet pages that there is a problem. Am I missing something?

If it's not a password protected proxy, what address and port number is it?

I always get the internet page not available message, try again and check settings etc.

I have many reasons for setting one up, but mainly the fact that I'm currently working towards my MCSE qualification so I like to try out different things and I like to know lots of useless information.

I have tried many different servers from a list, none of them say they are password protected http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html
