sorting on xcel worksheet

I am trying to sort a 3 column table where the 1st column is the date i.e. 22.08.06 by going to DATA- SORT as normal but when I try to sort it by DATE it sorts by the DAY date only and not by the DAY/MTHYEAR as I want it to. Any help woud be appreciated.

highlight the first column, then go into
Format -> Cells
The first tab is 'number', choose 'date from the list. This should help, alhtough it should do it automatically.
You may need to enter the dates as 22/08/06 rather than 22.08.06 though

You could format the date as just plain numbers, sort by these numbers, then reformat as dates again.
