Sony Ericsson W810i stand by display

Does anyone know how I can get my phone to display the time when it's on stand by? The instruction manual claims it does it automatically but mine just has a blank screen when I'm not using it. Thanks

it does it automatically kind of lol - if you press any other button apart from the middle menu button it should light up and give you the time

Press the volume buttons and it shows just the time, with a message indicator if you have a new message, etc.
