Are there any free HD providers yet? If not then why are all new TVs being sold HD ready, when the service is only through subscription?

Widespread HD TV broadcasts via Freeview may not be possible until after the switch-over to digital TV in 2012.
the have started selling HD READY tv's so people can be ready for when they convert over in a few years besides hopefully by then you will be able to pick up a HD ready tv really cheap, with the fall in prices over the next few years. they have also just release in japan the first HD dvd player its a whopping 600 pounds and as yet has only a few titles with only a few studios signing up at the moment. my tip is look out for blu ray dvds they are its competition and if the ps3 takes off in november everyone will buy them dvds.....
just another bit of info for you, just found out sky have started selling HD boxes. after you have paid for the box its an extra 10pounds on the subscription fee every month to view it in HD. just thought i would let you know.....
