Dual Layer DVD writing...

My new laptop can record onto dvd, just like my pc, but it says on the disc tray "DVD - RW / DL"
I assume this is dual layer. What is dual layer recording? Whats the difference from normal recording?

DVD5 is like a regular CD in that it's one-sided (one side is the data, the other is the label), and also single-layer (just one layer of data).
DVD10 is twice a DVD5 (hence the name). So it's like taking two regular DVDs and putting them together so the label sides touch: double-sided, but still single layer.
DVD9 is dual layer, which is like the DVD5 but it has two layers of data, not just one. Still single-sided though, with the other side being the label side.
DVD18 is, you've guessed it, dual layer and double-sided.
