internet goes blank and stops at 2.15am - every night!!

my internet connecttion stops responding and the pages stay white for about 5 mins every single night!!

what could this be? there are no scheduled maintenance tasks being performed (well i haven't set any) could something be automatically updating or something and how do i find out what?

I think your first port of call should be your ISP and see what they have to say. Can you use the phone? You're just gonna have to narrow down the possibilities.
could be Microsoft automatic update
When I was on Bulldog Broadband DSL they used to reset my connection about that time, actually it was closer to 1am, but BST and GMT may account for that...

I don't think its much of a problem, just make sure you either have a re-dialler (for PPoE DSL) or get your router to reconnect it for you..

I shouldn't think it'd be anything at your end causing it to do that.
Could be your ISP switching between metered and unmetered access (although that shouldn't really disconnect you) or a Scheduled task on your PC. Does your ISP have any user forums you can ask on?

it doesn't disconnect me - it just stops responding to mouse clicks etc and takes an extremely long time eventually bring up the page i want - its usually about 5-10 seconds but at this time it can be about 3-4-5 minutes

Try defragging and scanning your hard drives. (ScanDisk)
