My Norton AntiVirus is due to expire tomorrow, 11th. I'm currently doing a full scan and so far............

They have been prompting me to renew however I forgot. When the scan is finished no doubt I'll be given the opportunity to renew. There have been times when i've read there are several free antivurus sites, but at this late stage, I don't know whether to try to find one or indeed if it will be straightforward as it's late'ish for me now and we're going away tomorrow. So, what would you suggest. There is one further issue, I've been tempted to upgrade my machine from windows '98 to maybe XP, so whatever I choose, will Norton be transferrable ?.

if your machine is currently running Windows 98 I doubt very much if it will be powerful enough to run Windows XP.

Windows XP is NOT just a slight upgrade to Windows 98. It is a totally different operating system and requires a much more powerful machine to run it than Windows 98 did.

You need AT LEAST 256 Mb of memory (or more likely 512mb) and you need a faster CPU.
You can download an excellent free anti virus here. It is AVG anti virus

You will also need a firewall (zonealarm is good and free)

And some sort of spyware detector (adaware is a good free one)

Hi and thanks. I felt I should do a complete scan last night whilst I was still WITH Norton and after what seemed a long time, I clicked on "close" instead on minimise and lost the lot. The comp froze for a while (old age), then I thought I'd have one last go. I start-up, Norton had sent me a reminder to renew, I took a quick look here and saw no-one had seen my post, so I thought lets do it, especially as I'm off on hol in a few hrs. I also run Spybot and Adware.

Reference upgrading. I am aware this old machine would not be suitable to have the software for XP installed. It was/is my intention to have a complete new system later in the year. Question ?, will me Norton be transferrable? or I should I be prepared to loose it ?. Catch you later in the week.
If I were you i'd uninstall the norton rubbish and install the programs vehelpfulguy talks about.

And if you get a new machine, just download the programs onto that machine again. They're all free and don't require any license keys or any rubbish like that.
