Why does my Nokia 6280 mix up my texts?

When I go to read I sometimes find one text merged into an older one, then some gobbildy-gook at the end.

What is happening? It's not just my own phone either, my best friends sony erricsson can actually delete the message on a newly received & opened text before she can even read it! (replacing it with an old text).

I'm aware that mobiles maybe condense texts, could this be causing it... ?
Can this be fixed? It can get so frustrating!
