When I insert an DVD-R, to copy onto, it burns at 4x and when I put in another 4x DVD-R, only difference is the make of disc, it burns at 2x???

Makes no sense - same disc, same speed, different make, ones burns at 4x and the other at 2x.

I don't understand why some burn at 2x and some at 4x. I'd assume they use different dyes and the software you're using recognises them as having different maximum speeds.

But, it's worth pointing out that for video DVDs it's often good practice to burn at a lower speed like 2x anyway. Sometimes standalone players have a hard time reading them if they've been burnt at higher speeds.
