Speakers!

My computer speakers are playing up. The sound only seems to come out from one, and when I twist the volume button it is all scratchy and, the sound half comes out of the other speaker. Any idea how I can cure this?

Mine used to do that and I nearly shelled out for a new pair, until it turned out the three-point plug was just being tempremental. I have to knock it into the extension cord and wiggle it around a bit, but then it works - could be that?
