When i try to download an application, a small window pops up saying:
You have chosen to open:
[Application Name]
What should Firefox do with this file?
Open with:
Save to disc:
It only ever seems to go to save to disc etc. This means I have to use Internet Explorer or AOL to download.
I'm assuming it's Firefox's download manager.
How can I turn the download manager off?

That's fine - it's just downloading to the hard drive.

When it's downloaded, you can open it as normal.

Directly opening a downloaded application (irrespective of the browser you use) risks a possibly virus-infected application bypassing your anti-virus software.

You should always 'save to disk'. Then carry out a virus scan on the file before opening it.
