All of my music and photos are stored in folders in my computer.

When I import then to i-tunes, does that actually then double the memory used on my computer, or does i-tunes only link back to the location where the file is already stored?

No it doesn't halve the hard drive space, (I think that's what you were getting at) it is just linked to your music folder.

So even though some songs are listed once in the itunes folder, and once in my music, they are in fact the same file?

Not all my music is in the itunes folder, even though they're in the itunes library...does that mean the songs that are in the itunes folder don't need to be there? Or is it inconsequential anyway seeing as it takes up no more space?

Behappy87, They are not using up any more space, so just leave them, if you physically delete them you will delete the files from the library and lose them altogether. They are just links.
