I press icon to connect to internet "connect now". I hear the modem trying to get through. it then redials twice more then says "uanable to establish a connection". I have had this similair problem when, say, the telephone is already in use ie engaged, or if one of the wires was loose in the phone extension cable, that is why i double checked all the phone wires
Can you hear the modem at the other end? Are you sure you are dialling the correct number? If you dial on the phone, does a modem answer.

If you get the 'unable to...' after the modems have connected, it is possibly an account/access problem. Is yuor account with your ISP still active? Do have have CLI enabled?
This may sound stupid...but... have you had a recent storm. I had a problem like this a couple of years ago and we had been hit by lightening through the phone line. It damaged the modem in both my computers. Mine had to be replaced and my daughters had to have a new modem. Luckilly i was coverd on the home insurance
Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the driver for your modem.
