Clear cache, cookies and temporary files.
Defrag all hard drives and partitions.
Run spyware and trojan hunters.
I suggest you use Ewido, A squared, X-cleaner, spybot and ad-aware. They are all free.
Which firewall do you use? Norton could be responsible for your problems.
When your computer has finally booted and before you open any programmes, have a look at your task manager. How many processes are running?

This can sometimes be caused by Windows looking for an external device or network that is no longer there.
I do not know youre setup, but if you have ever connected to a remote PC or network, and then that device has been removed, it can cause a delay like this.
I installed Windows 2003 (for servers) at home once and it used to take 30 MINUTES for the deskop to appear. Never found out why and gave up using it.

Thank you for your replies.I have done all the usual thigs as you suggest, although I don't know how to clear cache, cookies and temp.files. I am using ad-aware and spybot at the moment and my Firewall is built in with my Broadband connection. I should add, this problem has only started in the last few weeks although I have not installed anything untoward to my knowledge.
This is most probably because your profile is very large.
Remove some files in:
C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername
(If you know what your doing).
Or, the best option, is to create a whole new windows username account. As the profile of this new user would be deault. I find this is the best option for me.
