No - it will have no effect on the cost of your broadband.

In fact a wireless router is essential to be able to access the internet by your wifi enabled laptop.
Think of the router as the signal transmitter - it beams the signal all over the house.

The laptop has a built in aerial to pick that signal up. Without the router, it will not be able to connect to the signal.

You can also buy an internal card, or external dongle, for your desktop pc, which will act as an aerial and make your desktop wifi too.
