pointer freezes

After working on my windows xp computer, everything things seemed ok, I left it for a while whilst I was out, and came back to it the pointer was froze it would not move, the mouse was connected fine, so I restarted it, and when it came on it sometimes says desktop recovery, any ideas what may be causing this? plz
