American mains radios will almost certainly be built for 115 volts and be ruined by connecting them to the UK's 240 volt supply. Unless, that is, the radio is dual-voltage and has a selector switch. Check before connecting (or buying) an American radio.

Portable radios will of course work anywhere when fitted with the correct batteries.
